From Rich to Poor, From Poor To No More

Living twenty-one years on this earth, I've moved at least 6 times around the bay area. From Hayward to Oakland, from Oakland to San Leandro, from San Leandro to Antioch, from Antioch to Dublin, and from Dublin now in San Leandro. I know it’s a lot of back tracking but the main reasons for all the movement is the communities, crime rate, and the income. In common cities heard about such as Oakland, Hayward, and San Leandro, the crime rate begins to rise every year and mostly caused by African American and Mexican Men and Women. Most of the time I believed that it was the city that were causing these problems, but as I moved around it began to be the people.

In Hayward at 5 years old in 1995, I got lost in my city with my little brother and people in my neighborhood helped me found my mother 8 hours later. Someone found me and my brother and bought us Taco Bell and watched out for us because I felt like he knew something was wrong. If I knew who the man was today I would really give him thanks for watching for us. Why? Because in the year 2011 if anyone's child gets lost they are either missing and never found or missing and found deceased. The world is so sick to me now because children as young as infants are being stolen, raped, or killed for no reason. I wish I was living in those days. The neighborhood made a major difference in crime rate.

In my case, it was a lot of things to think about but my mind mostly was stuck on why we, African American people have to act the way we do and don’t expect people to judge us. I see why other ethnicities judge us the way they do, it’s because the crime rate and what we do to our communities…

  1. Hello Jenice... I believe you are a very powerful writer with a very unique view point that keeps readers engaged and wanting more. I can relate to this post because I too have moved around a lot throughout my time on this planet and that instability can cause some people to stray away from the right path but I am glad to see you here at year up working hard. I also have lived in Oakland and the crime rate is crazy. I also think that the people cause the major problems with crime and not the city. Although living in an urban city I think some people have gotten caught up in the urban life and don't know any better. So I think it up to use to educate are self and help are community.
